I remember one night, I arrived in Usinsk for work after a torturous journey from Western Europe, and typically, nobody from the company was there to meet me. It was the middle of winter and there were literally trenches cut into the snow for pedestrians to walk through, alongside the roads. I had to find a restaurant to get some dinner, and in typical Russian style, a group of local people invited me, a solitary foreigner, to eat with them. And obviously, after dinner, the vodka came out. Because I had to work early the next morning and I was jet-lagged, I made my excuses after a couple of drinks. Leaving the restaurant, there was an icy ramp down to the road, and a beautiful and elegantly dressed young lady was approaching. I thought "I must not slip... I must not slip..." and made my way carefully towards the ramp. Bang! I ended up straight on my back, and actually hit my head hard on the ground. I don't know what was worse. The pain from falling, or the look of complete disdain on the woman's face as she passed me by with the word "pyanitsa!" (drunkard!)

@ketiluftwaaffe Thanks to you for sharing these amazing photos. I love them! It's the huge piles of snow in the road that reminded me of that episode. My best mission was to Yuzhno Sakhalinsk, where there is a fantastic mixture of Japanese, Soviet, and modern Russian architecture, but tragically, I didn't have my camera with me and it was before the days of smartphones. There, the snow trenches were amazing! Maybe when I retire I'll get the chance to revisit all these places with my cameras, and record the journeys for my future grandchildren!
