Nikon EM is a baby SLR, specially designed and marketed to the growing market of new women photographers then entering the SLR buyer's market in 1982. Called internally “the Nikon for women”, the EM was designed to provide style (exterior contours sculpted by Italian automobile stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro. Back in the days it was setup with Nikon E series lens and was heavily criticized by Nikon fans and I can understand why; this camera is compact and very light weight and handicapped without full manual exposure and only Aperture priority; but to the novice its almost like a point and shoot. There is a needle on the left side of the viewfinder which tells you what shutter speed is being used in case you're hand holding and there is a risk of shake. A beep-beep sounds notifies you if the aperture is too wide risking overexposure and for back light subjects an exposure compensation button is available to give you additional 2-stops of exposure. I got mine with a MD-E motor drive and it still looks quite small and cute! Shooting with it was quite easy but I did get some really underexposed shots. Perhaps I will give it another go in the future and who knows I might just keep this baby SLR always in my bag (apart from my Lomo-LCA).
