Handmade color processing with Tetenal Color Colortec C-41 Rapid Negative Kit

19

After I started to develop black and white film, I really wanted to know if it was possible to do the same with color negatives, but the guys at the lab told me: “color film processing is different…you need to get the right temperatures, find the right chemistry, and the chemistry will expire fast, the lab is cheaper and reliable, you’ll waste your money and time…”

But I was decided!

I did some research, found some reviews, products and prices on the web.

Et voilá!

Tetenal Colortec C-41 Rapid Negative Kit (5Ltr)

This is the chemistry I’m currently using and I’m going to show you how easy, quick and efficient it can be.
Inside the box you’ll find 6 bottles:

- Color Developer CD Part 1
- Color Developer CD Part 2
- Color Developer CD Part 3
- Bleach Fix BX Part 1
- Bleach Fix BX Part2
- Stabilizer STAB

The mixing instructions are quite simple, I bought the 5 liter pack but I only use 1L at the time.

As you can see I process two 135 films or one 120 film (my developing tank capacity).

- Pre-heat the tank (I skip that)
- The color developer and the bleach fix must be at least at 100 degrees Farenheit / 38 degrees Celsius, for a 3’15” development and a 4’00’’ bleach fix.
- Rinse for 3 minutes and stabilizer for 1 minute.

You can also use an alternative process for lower temperatures (by increasing the processing time).

And how many rolls of film can it process? The product description mentions 12 rolls per litre.

Well, it depends…I developed (both negative and slide film) around 20 rolls or more with 1 litre and I’m happy with the results. If I see it doesn’t please me I increase the processing time, and if it doesn’t work that’s because it has expired (useful for experiments!!!).

No wasted money, no wasted time! And I love processing film!!
Take a look at the outcome!

The hardest part is to prepare the chemicals. Developing is very straightforward, imho even easier and faster that B/W.
A tip to control the temperature of the chemicals... it's A LOT easier to keep all the bottles of chemicals in a deep tub filled with water at the right temperature and let the chemicals slowly heat up.
Keep also the tank in hot water while not stirring, this helps to mantain a constant temperature for the 3' of developement and the 4' of blix.

Hello! I just started developing color film and I use the Tetenal Colortec C-41 kit. I have a question. On the outside of the box, it says "for rotary development". I am developing by hand in a small tank. Does anybody know if the development time should be adjusted because of this? I had had come across a post on another website which that was speaking about another Tetenal product (Tetenal C-41 Press Kit). Their instructions indicated to develop for 3:15 in a rotary machine (e.g. jobo), or develop 3:30 if manual tank process. Does anybody increase the dev time from 3:15 to 3:30 in manual tank for the Tetenal Colortec C-41 kit? Thanks! John.

loaded up the tank and this will be my first try at the C41! I hope this works and I got the same chemicals as you...
