Rough, blurred out, and out of focus—these are the defining aesthetics that dominated the Provoke Era.

"Provoke" emerged in Japan during the 1960s when the country was undergoing massive social and political changes. At the center of this counter cultural movement was a magazine of the same name founded by photographers Yutaka Takanashi and Takuma Nakahira, critic Koji Taki, and writer Takahiko Okada.

Are, bure, bokeh, which translates to rough, blurred out, and out of focus, became the dominating visual language of the era and actively rejected the norms of photojournalism at that time. For the Provoke artists, the camera served as an extension of their vision and emotion, not just a passive recorder of the unfolding events. And as the magazine's subtitle suggested, their work were “provocative documents for the sake of thought."

For this challenge, we're paying tribute to this influential photography movement. Time to take out those thought-provoking snapshots that are rough, blurred out, and out of focus.

Each participant may submit up to 10 photographs. This competition serves as the qualifying round of the Movement category
